February 6th: Welcome Americans!
The
chills ran down my entire body the moment my alarm clock went off. We had our
bedroom window open and the cold winter air blew in. It was 8 am which is my
routine time to wake up here in Castig (at least for now), and with one eye
open I saw both my roommates buried under their sheets. Once I was finally
brave enough to endure the cold I ran out of my bed and put on a jacket. After
I put my face on, I walked out into the hallway and to my surprise I saw white
frost covering the town. I ran into my room, put on a billion layers of
clothing and ran outside to take pictures. For someone who doesn’t like the
cold I was quick to run out the door. There is something so beautiful about the
landscape here and it is calming in any weather. Looking around it feels as if
you are a part of history, something so much larger than yourself. After going
to the market and ordering the best sandwich I have ever had (I ordered in
Italian), I came back to get ready for the Welcome Party that was being
thrown for us at Bar La Posta. I’ve never felt more welcomed yet so
uncomfortable. Many of the Italians could speak English fairly well but I still
found there was a barrier. I could not find words to say to these unfamiliar
creatures. Unintentionally, I came across distant and uninterested. Because of
my lack of comfort, I decided to get pizza with Alexa, Rachel and a few other
girls. After eating for the fourth time that day I went back and video chatted
with Josh. I was happy to see his face and couldn’t seem to stop smiling. It
was a good way to end the night to say the least.
